passage to Canton in the S. S. "Fatshan", owned by Messrs. Butter- -field and Swire. The ticket collector (a Portuguese) on the ship finding the man rolled up in a blanket endeavoured to obtain his fare. It was proved in the Court of H. B. M. Consul-General at Canton that no violence was used and that the passenger was pro- -bably dead already: but the Self-Government Society at Canton stated that the ticket collector had kicked him to death and demanded re-trial. This was refused by the Consul-General and thereupon the Society organised a boycott against Messrs. Butter- -field and Swire. (Sir F. D. Lugard's Confidential Despatch to Secretary of State dated 12th. June, 1909). The boycott became effective and hit the firm very hard. They endeavoured to com- -promise the matter by making a donation of over $400,000 to the Hongkong University: but, in spite of the help of the Viceroy at Canton, who issued on the 15th. June, 1909, a proclamation mention- -ing the donation, exonerating lessrs. Butterfield and Swire and ordering that trade with them "should be carried on quietly as before", the boycott continued. At last a Chinese merchant of Amoy approached the Compradore of Messrs. Butterfield and Swire with a view to arranging terms, and in August, 1909, the firm agreed to the following humiliating conditions:-

1.

Pay $5,200 as compensation to the relatives of the

deceased passenger.

2.

Dismiss the Captain of the Ship (the senior officer in

the firm's service).

3.

4.

Post a notice on the steamer, warning the Captain,

officers and crew against ill-treating Chinese passengers.

Use their best endeavours to secure a re-trial of the

Portuguese ticket-collector before the Portuguese Consul.

These terms being carried out the boycott ceased.

On the 25th. November, 1911, a meeting was held in Canton, at which a resolution was passed to againt boycott everything Japanese, the alleged reason being that the Japanese were supplying arms and ammunition to the Imperialists at Peking. Letters were sent by Canton guilds to Singapore, Hongkong and
